This roadworks project was originated through the Neighborhood Traffic Calming (NTC) program that involves residents in the affected neighborhood. It was prioritized following a near-miss traffic incident.

The City will use surplus paving funds to repave this section of W Annandale Road and add the following:

  • Narrower painted 10-foot travel lanes,
  • 5-foot-wide bike lanes on both sides of the road, and
  • A “Stop Ahead” marking and curb extensions.

Construction will take place in November 2025, and is expected to take two weeks to complete.

The traffic lights at this intersection are “hanging by a thread. This area was also a NTC request. An engineering review determined that a 4-way stop was a better fit for this intersection.

The implementation of this change is expected to begin this December. The existing crosswalks will be repainted. Staff will post notices to inform the public of this change. The traffic signals will be bagged and removed after 90 days.

This intersection is also expected to be repaved in 2026, at which time high-visibility crosswalks will be added.

ADA compliant crosswalks and ramps at N Washington and Columbia Streets

ADA-compliant crosswalks and ramps will be installed at this intersection, along with pedestrian signals. The new crosswalks will be stamped asphalt in accordance with the new City standards. New traffic signals will also be installed and signal heads and span wires from Dominion Virginia Power (DVP) utility poles will be removed.

This project was approved in FY2015 and is funded by $1.4 million in State grants.

The project will take eight months and is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
