Updates on Construction of a Mini-Roundabout at W Annandale and Gundry and on Other Major Roadworks

Summary
- The W Annandale Road and Gundry Drive intersection will have a roundabout in fall 2026.
- At the S Maple Ave and W Annandale Rd intersection, the periphery work is finished, and construction of the roundabout is set to begin. Expect significant traffic disruption for the next two to three months.
- The Great Falls and Lincoln Avenue stormwater work is also scheduled to be completed in the fall. Sections of Lincoln Avenue will be experiencing construction until early 2028.
- The N Washington St and Columbia St traffic signal work has been delayed several months because of scheduling issues with Dominion Energy. This project is now expected to be completed in fall 2026.
- The W&OD Trail crossing at Grove Avenue now being designed is not wide enough to accommodate a median requested by some Citizens Advisory Committee on Transportation (CACT) members.
Efforts continue to improve safety on W Annandale and Gundry
At the end of 2025, bike lanes were added to W Annandale Road in an attempt to narrow the street and slow traffic in the densely populated Winter Hill neighborhood. Despite those efforts, residents continue to be distressed by near misses and speeding.

At the City Council meeting on January 27, 2026, three girls from Winter Hill spoke about the safety issues and suggested that speed bumps were needed. Huxley Anderson and Ellie Singer identified the problem of cars failing to stop at the three-way intersection and provided their counts of the number of cars that did not to stop over a 20-minute period. Grace Godelis described the near-miss her father experienced.
By June, the City’s Department of Public Works responded with a design for a mini roundabout to replace the three-way stop. The design is shown below. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026.

Greening of Lincoln
The replacement of major stormwater pipes around Lincoln Avenue and Great Falls and installation of a stormwater retention system in Lincoln Park is on schedule to be completed this fall. (See photo at top of this post.) Crosswalks and sidewalks at the intersection will be installed once the stormwater work is finished.
The stormwater infrastructure crew will focus on Walden Court next.
Construction on Lincoln Avenue is expected to continue until early 2028. This includes only the portions of the project that have been funded. Information on the design and cost of this project is available in the Pulse post The Greening of Lincoln Cost Estimate Balloons to $20 million, July 15, 2025.
S Maple and W Annandale roundabout
Sidewalks and utility infrastructure have been relocated at this major City intersection. Workers are starting to build the median and roundabout. Expect significant traffic disruptions at least until November with occasional lane closures and flagging operations when the crew is working close to the roadway.
The public is asked to avoid this busy intersection, if possible. This project was scheduled to be completed at the end of 2026. Information about the design and funding can be found in the Pulse post, The City’s First Roundabout: S Maple Ave and W Annandale Road, February 9, 2025.

North Washington Street and Columbia Street traffic signal and intersection improvements
This 8-month project was to be completed in spring 2026 but is now considerably delayed. Staff attribute recent delays to Dominion Virginia Energy scheduling issues. Dominion installation is now set to occur no later than the end of August. The City’s Department of Public Works now expects this project to be completed by fall 2026. Meanwhile, residents have complained about large construction vehicles parked on narrow residential streets and affecting pedestrian safety.
Design and funding information for this project can be found in the Pulse post, Three Roadworks Projects Planned in the Next 6 Months, October 27, 2025.
Grove Avenue W&OD crossing design will not include a median
Staff informed the Citizens Advisory Committee on Transportation (CACT) at their meeting on August 12, 2026, that they are working on the design for a new W&OD Trail crossing at Grove Avenue in response to concerns raised by many residents. (Read Grove Avenue’s Growing Safety Concerns Raise Questions About Traffic in Falls Church. July 21, 2026.) CACT members had asked about a median at the crossing, like other W&OD crossings in the City, but staff explained that the street is not wide enough at that location to install a median. Staff is considering narrowing the street and other traffic calming options.
